1.Aerodynamic Design and development of micro vertical axis wind turbine

2.Wind turbine
A wind turbine is a device that converts kinetic energy from the wind, also called wind energy, into mechanical energy; a process known as wind power.
If the mechanical energy is used to produce electricity, the device may be called wind turbine or wind power plant.

3.Types of wind turbine
HORIZONTAL  AXIS wind turbine (HAWT)
Vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT)
DARRIEUS
GIROMILLS
SAVONIUS

4.HAWT
Axis of rotation is horizontal Main rotor shaft and electrical generator at the top of a tower. It must be pointed into the wind.

5.HAWT advantages
The tall tower base allows access to stronger wind in sites with wind shear.
In some wind shear sites, every ten meters up, the wind speed can increase by 20% and the power output by 34%.
the  blades  always  moves  perpendicularly  to  the  wind, receiving  power  through  the  whole  rotation.
It is more efficient than VAWT.

6.HAWT disadvantages
The  tall  towers  and  blades  up  to  90  meters  long  are  difficult  to  transport. Transportation can now cost 20% of equipment costs.
Tall HAWTs are difficult to install, needing very tall and expensive cranes  and skilled operators.
Massive tower construction is required to support the heavy blades, gearbox,  and generator.
HAWTs require an additional yaw control mechanism to turn the blades toward the wind.

7.VAWT
Axis of rotation is vertical.
the generator and gearbox  placed near the ground.
Adjustable according to wind direction.
Easy maintenance.

8.VAWT advantages
Designs without yaw mechanisms are possible with fixed pitch rotor designs.
The generator of a VAWT can be located nearer the ground, making it easier  to maintain the moving parts.
VAWTs have lower wind startup speeds than HAWTs
VAWTs may be built at locations where taller structures are prohibited.
VAWTs may have a lower noise signature than HAWT.

9.VAWT disadvantages
VAWTs’ parts are located on the ground, they are also located under  the weight of the structure above it, which can make changing out parts nearly impossible without dismantling the structure if not designed properly.
Wind at lower altitude is slower so less wind energy is available.
Wind at lower altitude can create turbulent flow which causes vibration and bearing wear.

10.TYPES OF VAWTs
DARRIEUS – curved blade, good efficiency, high cost, require additional power source to start.
GIROMILLS – H shape (vertical blade), less efficient, require strong wind to start.
SAVONIUS – S shape (having scoop), low cost, highly reliable, self start.
